Permissions - Who to talk to

Check with your Local Authority which licences, permits and regulations you need to comply with. These may vary between Local Authorities. Look at similar events organised within your area, especially those recognised as 'best practice'.

The Health and Safety Executive "Event Safety Guide" is a useful tool - contact: www.hse.gov.uk for information. The Home Office has also published a "Good Practice Safety Guide" for small and sporting events taking place on the highway, roads and public places.

Ensure that you research carefully as some permissions have specific lead in times therefore you need to make sure that you apply in good time.

Contact your Local Authority, a designated officer will be able to advise you on the event and who else within the authority you need to involve.

Overall responsibility lies with the event organiser or designated group ~ remember it is your responsibility to ask not others' responsibility to tell you. By developing or requesting advice from the safety advisory group early on most of these contacts should be established or signposted.

Remember these people are here to help you.

Examples might be in the following list but go through your event logically and consider any that might be specific to your venue:

  • Site landowner
  • Licensing Authority
  • Local Authority Highways Dept
  • Health and Safety Executive
  • Police/Child Protection
  • Environment Agency
  • Agricultural Associations
  • Caravan/Camping Associations
  • Emergency Services
  • Performing Rights Society
  • Veterinary Associations
  • Volunteer Organisations
  • Medical Organisations
