CandlesTurn Out Your Lights For Earth Hour

Between 8pm and 9pm tonight, Saturday March 29th, is Earth Hour when people across the world will be turning off their lights for an hour to signify their commitment to energy conservation and the reduction of our carbon footprint.

Promoted by the World Wildlife Fund, the first event was held last year on the 31st March in Sydney - and was estimated to cut the Sydney mains electricity consuption by up to 10% during that hour.

This year the event has been taken up globally, with cities around the world - including Sydney, Tel Aviv, Dubai, San Francisco, New Delhi, Toronto, Dublin and Copenhagen to name just a few - committing to turn off their lights. Google, the search engine giant, has turned its homepage black to promote and mark the event.

People and businesses, including major landmarks, will turn off their lights and any non-essential electrical equipment to raise awareness of the need for energy conservation and to symbolize that each one of us can contribute to making a positive impact on climate change - no matter where we live.

The President of the World Wildlife Fund, Carter S Roberts, has said, "This is the perfect opportunity for individuals, governments, businesses and communities around the world to unite for a common purpose, in response to a global issue that affects us all."
