Is your Museum signed up to the Kids in Museums Manifesto?

26th February 2010

Categories: What's New

Visitors to museums up and down the country have just launched their very own Manifesto with the aim of encouraging and supporting museums and galleries around the country to make family visits more enjoyable.

Kids in Museums was founded in 2003 under the auspices of the Guardian when writer Dea Birkett's young son was thrown out of the Royal Academy for being too noisy.  The Group now leads in promoting family-friendly policies and attitudes throughout Britain.

Compiled entirely from families' comments the Manifesto includes 20 practical points showing how museums and galleries can be more welcoming for all families. Pointers include:

  • 'Don't assume what kids want'
  • 'Don't forget toddlers and teenagers'
  • 'Be height aware'
  • 'Have flexible family tickets'

It's hoped that the Manifesto will be embraced by museums throughout the country who can sign up and add their name to the growing number of places that aspire to be family friendly and display the Manifesto at their museums as recognition of their support.

More comments from museum visitors are always welcome too, simply join the debate on the Manifesto discussion board and continue to aspire Museums to make family visitors more fun.

Copies of the Manifesto can be downloaded from the Kids in Museums website or free print copies can be requested by emailing mainifesto@kidsinmuseums.org.uk - they are perfect to pin up on notice-boards, windows and walls.
