One of Britain's leading tourism organisations is heading for North East England.
Working with Regional Development Agency One NorthEast, The Coach Tourism Council [CTC] has chosen the region as the destination for one of its annual familiarisation trips for its members.
The CTC, which represents more than 300 coach operators and tourism suppliers, is the leading industry body in the UK for promoting travel and tourism by coach. Coach tourism is hugely important for UK tourist destinations with more than five million people taking a coach tour in the UK each year.
The visit from 27-29 January is the first time members have visited the North East to enjoy a special event showcasing many of the North East's tourist attractions and hotels.
Based at the Ramside Hall Hotel near Durham City and coordinated by Corbridge based tourism consultants Steve Reed Tourism Ltd, the event has attracted some leading coach companies and group travel organisers - each capable of generating new and additional business for the region's tourism economy.
Members of the group will be taken to The Bowes Museum, Locomotion, the National Railway Museum in Shildon, County Durham, a coastal tour of Sunderland and South Shields, Bede's World, NewcastleGateshead's quayside taking in the iconic landmarks of The Sage Gateshead and Baltic: Centre for Contemporary Arts.
The trip will also include a visit to The Alnwick Garden; Durham City, Crook Hall and Garden and Beamish - The North of England Open Air Museum.
Denise Wigham is the Group Travel Coordinator for One NorthEast said: "We were very happy to encourage such an important and influential organisation as the Coach Tourism Council to choose the North East region as one of their 2008 showcase destinations.
"The event will highlight to the CTC buyers how far the North East has moved over the years in terms of providing a vibrant and high quality service to visitors - and particularly so for groups of visitors using coach travel as their chosen form of transport."
Paul Ovington, from the Coach Tourism Council, said: "Coach operators from across the UK are always looking to improve and refresh their tour programme and these showcase visits play an important part in helping them develop new tours for their brochures."
