Night Tourism 'Increasingly Popular'

Kielder Star TrailsThe North East Visitor Experience Continues After Dark

According to One NorthEast Tourism, a new niche in tourism is becoming increasingly popular - and North East England is particularly well placed to exploit it.

Night tourism refers to visitor experiences that take place after dark.  Rather than discos, theatres and eating and drinking, the more usual nighttime activities, night tourism focusses on experienced-based activities such as night walking, bird watching, star gazing, ghost walks and even haunted sleepovers!

North East England 'well suited'

North East England is apparently a perfect destination in which to experience the great outdoors at night.  The magnificent landscape holds ideal conditions for stargazing, with regular star camps allowing amateur astronomers to sleep under the stars.  Kielder, for example, is the place with the least light pollution in the whole country, so offers a real chance to get back to night as nature intended it.

Tania Robinson, Head of Marketing at One North East said: “Night tourism is proving to be an increasingly popular trend in North East England.

“The range of events and activities taking place in the region means the fun doesn’t have to stop once the dark nights start drawing in. We want people to make the most of what is on offer over the winter months.”

Ideas put forward for visitors and residents alike to enjoy are:

  • Star Gazing in Kielder Forest, Northumberland
  • Haunted sleepovers at Heugh Gun Battery in Hartlepool, Tees Valley.
  • Evensong at Durham Cathedral, Durham.
  • Floodlit tour of NewcastleGateshead quayside.
  • Moonlight walk on coast or countryside
