Floods in NorthumberlandFlood Support Available for Tourism Businesses

Comprehensive support - in the form of funding and practical advice - is now available for businesses affected by flooding or who might be at risk from it.

Support for businesses already hit by the flooding

One NorthEast - the regional development agency for North East England - has made emergency funding and support available to businesses hit by the recent floods.  Managed through Business Link North East, the service offers:

  • advice and help in developing individual recovery plans
  • help with dealing with insurance providers
  • support in making contingency plans to safeguard the business against future flooding
  • fast-tracking of funding applications

Businesses in need of help as a direct result of suffering from flooding should contact Business Link on 0845 600 9006.

Help with clearing dead livestock

One NorthEast has also offered to meet the costs of clearing sheep carcasses where livestock have drowned when the flooding hit. These costs would normally be met by the farmers. A special collection point has been opened at Ewart Newtown Farm, Wooler, where carcasses will be removed for incineration.

Farmers wanting further information are urged to contact Northumberland Trading Standards on Tel: 01670 534771

Support for businesses at risk from future flooding

Businesses that may be at risk from flooding in the future need to make sure they have clear plans in place.  They should take all steps they can to understand and manage the risks and then have routines and procedures ready to:

  • secure the safety of staff and customers
  • minimise the loss of business and the downturn of future business
  • manage the clean-up process quickly
  • ensure the swift resumption of day-to-day operations
