Digital CityNorth East England Economy "healthier than ever"

One NorthEast, the regional development agency for our region, has just released a special 64-page brochure to recruitment agencies across the UK - an invitation to top level senior managers to explore the wealth of opportunities emerging across a range of 'hot' sectors in the region.

Over the last few years innovation and investment has led to the region developing a strong reputation as a centre for growth in a number of key industries:

  • energy and the environment
  • healthcare and health sciences
  • process industries (the extraction and transformation of raw materials, as in the chemical, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, mining industries and so on)

As a result, North East England is experiencing higher employment growth than any of the other nine regions in the UK.

The energy market in the north east is currently estimated to be worth around £900m (the most productive of all sectors in the region) and employs around 8,000 people. It is hoped that 19,400 people will be employed in this sector by 2016. Healthcare is another major pillar, comprising more than 6,000 related organisations with an annual turnover of £5bn.

Tees Valley, the new international centre for process industries and home to this sector's national skills academy, is set for some £6bn worth of private investment and will create 16,000 graduate and technician jobs over the next eight years.

Other emerging sectors include digital technology, creative, gaming and animation and food and drink. The broader creative and cultural sector contributes in total over £1 bn to our regional economy.

But it isn't just the growth that's attracting top level people to the North East - it's also the lifestyle. With top-rated schools, fantastic coastlines, unparallelled countryside, culture, art and shopping the region as a whole is spectacularly well equipped to attract the highest flyers.
