Darlington is making the most of social media opportunities and has just announced the hiring of a Twitterer-in-Residence to help promote local events and news and to put Darlington on the national map for all the right reasons.
The appointment of IT Teacher, Mike McTimoney, who tweets under the name TheDarloBard, is part of The Darlington Experiment, which describes itself on its website as "a fun web-based 'experiment' to increase the positive perceptions of Darlington using social media sites. We aim to reach people all over the UK and beyond".
The website, thought to be the first of its kind dedicated to a single town, was launched in September. It channels all videos posted on the internet about the town from other sites such as Flickr, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Andy Atkins, a member of the Darlington Partnership which is funding the Dx2 Experiment says: "Dx2 is Europe's biggest social media experiment and having our very own Twitterer was a natural progression".
And Mike says: "I think it is great to be the UK's first Twitterer-in-Residence and I hope other towns will follow suit".
