A firm has launched a simple, low-cost online process for small businesses to easily create mobile phone applications that can be distributed to their customers and uploaded to iTunes.
The company, Sweb Apps, says the service - which starts from around £120 - can take just a few minutes to create a customised, branded app. Users simply choose their industry - there are special categories for restaurants and entertainment, although all business types are accommodated - select which functionality and buttons they require, then upload their details and product or service information.
Restaurants can upload their menus and allow customers to make reservations, get directions, go straight to their Facebook or Twitter pages and even pre-order food. Entertainment businesses can upload details of shows, take reservations and alert users to up and coming events. There is a content management system to allow businesses to edit and change details as often as they like, and a tracking package so they can see how often their app is accessed and which buttons are most used etc.
This is a revolutionary service, which enables any business, no matter how small, to create a very low cost, state of the art, branded app and upload it to iTunes without any developer knowledge. However, there is a drawback: currently the apps created can only be used by iPhone users, just one of the popular brands of smartphone.
Nevertheless, this marks the shape of things to come, and no doubt other companies will soon be offering a similar process.
