Restaurants and Pubs (and Golf Courses)This information is part of the Quality Schemes topic:

There are no 'official' quality assurance schemes for restaurants and pubs. However, the AA independently assesses restaurants (including hotel, guest house and pub restaurants), and awards rosettes based on the quality of their food (although even one rosette is difficult to obtain, as the standards are high). Pubs with rooms can also be assessed as accommodation by either VisitBritain or the AA. Restaurants can request to be assessed or can be recommended by customers. Restaurants that are high quality, popular and pleasant but that don't meet the stiff one rosette criteria may make it as 'Neighbourhood' restaurants and be included in the online and print guides. Click here for the AA Recognition Schemes pages.
There are other well-respected and independent guides that have a large readership. They are independent because they rely on either their own inspections or recommendations from customers. Establishments cannot pay either to be assessed or to be included in any website or publication. Examples of these are The Good Pub Guide, published by Random House, the Which? Good Restaurant Guide published by Which? Books and The Michelin Guide with its famous/infamous Michelin stars.
