People 1stPeople 1st and the UK Skills Passport

Each different industry has its own 'council' made up of business representatives, academics, public sector bodies and industry leaders. These Sector Skills Councils take a key role in helping government to understand, shape and support business in these sectors, and, in the other direction, to provide the channel through which businesses get access to the support services government delivers.

The Tourism and Hospitality Sector Skills Council is called, appropriately, People 1st. As well as providing the voice for the Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism industries it provides a host of services to business:

  • Research
  • News
  • Skills strategy development (how the training and learning industry meets the needs of its Tourism and Hospitality customers)
  • Business Tools - such as the Safe and Legal package for small businesses
  • Career guide - aimed at staff in the sector
  • Stonebow - training and development provision
  • UKSP

UKSP - The UK Skills Passport

UKSP is a very large, detailed resource. Taken together it forms the essential guide to skills, career planning and development for the Tourism and Hospitality Sector. It provides:

  • Career Maps which plot a course for staff through the vast array of jobs on offer in this sector - including which qualifications and skills are required, what the career path can be for each post and where to find the right job
  • Development Planning - helps employers and employees identify what skills and development they need to achieve their goals
  • Good Employer Guide - for staff in the industry to determine which are the best employers, and who offers training and development as part of their overall package
  • Good Providers Guide - which training providers offer what and how well are they rated by their customers
  • Jobs - a place for employers to advertise and staff to find the right position
