Training and financial support available to help businesses survive

NOTE: You can attend a free event to learn more about what Train to Gain can do for you and your business at the Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough on Wednesday 28th January 2009 between 12.00 and 2.00pm. Small and medium sized businesses are now able to access additional help to train their staff, through a more flexible Train to Gain package. The government has pledged more help for smaller businesses because, in the words of Chris Banks, chair of the Learning and Skills Council, ‘We know that businesses which don’t invest in training are two-and-a-half times more likely to fail. Without doubt this extra money and support for smaller businesses really could make the difference between success and failure. We urge all employers to take advantage of it.’

What’s available?
The measures, available since the start of January, include:

  • Free and part-funded bite-size training courses in areas that make quick returns to a business. There are eligible courses in: finance and credit; profit management; risk management; business systems and processes; team working and communications; sales and marketing; IT; customer service
  • Full funding for basic skills courses and Level 2 qualifications (equivalent to 5 GCSEs),
  • Funding for sector-specific training  such as catering courses, hospitality courses, housekeeping and so on
  • Access to Train to Gain’s leadership and management programme for smaller businesses with between five and 250 employees, giving funding up to £1,000 for coaching and mentoring
  • Funding for Apprenticeships is also available
