The DFDS Seaways daily service between Newcastle and Ijmuiden, the port outside Amsterdam, has a double celebration this year.
Not only are its passenger numbers up by 10% with inbound tourism up by 19% in 2009, the company is also set to celebrate the route's 15th anniversary.
DFDS Seaways UK Managing Director John Crummie said: "NewcastleGateshead and the wider North East region has become even better value for money with a stronger Euro. We have seen a rise in the short break business from Holland and Germany, which is undoubtedly being driven by the favourable exchange rate".
This is great news all round for inbound tourism into the North East. It builds on the launch of the new Eastern Airways direct airline route between Newcastle and Bergen in Norway, as well as major efforts by individual tourism businesses themselves to encourage our European neighbours to visit and enjoy the delights of the North East.
We look forward to welcoming many more of our European neighbours this year.
