Hadrian's Wall was lit up with flaming torches last weekend to mark the opening of British Tourism Week, and tne National Trust will be opening its doors to visitors for free at the end of this week.
The first torch on Hadrian's Wall was lit at Segendunum Roman Fort in Wallsend, North Tyneside, at about 6pm on Saturday and the final torch was ignited at Bowness-on-Solway on Cumbria's west coast, about an hour later, with the entire 'line of light' remaining illuminated for about half an hour.
Other British Tourism Week events in the North East include the Great Value Days Out discount pass in Tyne and Wear, a visit to Bamburgh Castle by the Rt. Hon. Sir Alan Beith MP, and a Quayside Guided Walk of Newcastle and Gateshead Quayside.
And, The National Trust will be flinging its doors open to the public for a weekend of free access this Saturday and Sunday, 20 and 21 March 2010.
