Yarm the best high street in the UK
The Georgian market town of Yarm in Tees Valley was voted by BBC News website users as the town with best high street in the country.
All this week BBC Breakfast has been looking at the decline of specialist shops, as British high streets are increasingly overshadowed by huge supermarkets. Yarm's perfect balance of charming old-fashioned specialist shops, along-side trendy boutiques and convenience for the 21st century shopper, beat runners-up in Milton Keynes, Harlow and Abergavenny in Monmouthshire.
Julia Frater, Head of the Area Tourism Partnership - visitTeesvalley comments, "I am pleased that Yarm has been recognised nationally for its fantastic shopping experience. Yarm is a real gem to our region - the parking facilities are excellent and as well as offering an ideal shopping experience, along the high street there are a number of fantastic restaurants, pubs and cafes.
"The region's retail offer is continuously growing. Shopping centres in Middlesbrough are being refurbished and extended, with new shops opening and plans for more. We also have the award-winning Psyche designer department store as well as high street and designer shopping in Darlington, Hartlepool, Stockton and Redcar.
For local produce and crafts there are our weekly markets and monthly farmers markets - there really is something for everyone".
